About Trent and his practice
Trent graduated from National College of Naturopathic medicine in Portland OR in 1997 when he moved to Cranbrook to start his practice. In 2008 he joined his practice with Kootenay Chiropractic and Kootenay Massage to form the Kootenay Health Centre. In 2009 he married Liza and in 2010 they welcomed their daughter Ella. Coco, the family Cockapoo arrived in 2021. Trent is active outdoors and enjoys hiking, snowmobiling, wakesurfing and travelling.
His practice focus is treating pain in the spine and periphery using ultrasound guided prolotherapy, PRP, prolozone, hyaluronic acid, cortisone, neural therapy and peri-neural therapy. Trent also uses a variety of intravenous therapies to treat cancer, heart disease, fatigue, heavy metals and a range of other chronic diseases. He has prescribing authority in BC allowing him to prescribe a variety of pharmaceutical agents including hormones and antibiotics. It has been his experience that using the best of pharmaceutical medicine integrated with holistic natural medicine gives people the best outcomes.
In addition to clinical practice Trent also teaches. He is a Lead Instructor for Sport Medicine Ultrasound Canada, a ultrasound training group that teaches GP's, ER docs, specialists and ND's how to perform ultrasound guided PRP, hyaluronic acid, cortisone and prolotherapy. He is also part owner and instructor for West Coast Injection Training, another training group that teaches ND's, MD's, PA's and NP's palpation-based and ultrasound guided injection therapies for the peripheral joints and spine.

Diagnostics and Treatments
Diagnostic and Procedural Ultrasound
Long waitlists can make it frustrating to get a diagnostic ultrasound or an injection for pain. Dr. Brereton offers musculoskeletal diagnostic ultrasound scanning and procedures with relatively short wait times. He uses ultrasound to guide almost all of his injection therapies improving safety, accuracy and outcomes.
Platelet-Rich Plasma
Concentrated platelets made from your blood stimulate the repair of injured tissues when injected into and around the damaged area. Dr. Brereton uses two systems, Arthrexx Angel which concentrates platelets 8-18 times normal and a manual system that concentrates platelets 3 times normal. The Angel system is more costly than the manual PRP system because the Angel system uses a $400 kit and a dedicated centrifuge to optimize platelet concentration. The number of platelets injected into injured tissues is critical to success. Different tissues require different platelet counts to be successful, with joints requiring significantly more than ligaments and tendons. If a knee is injected with a billion or fewer platelets the treatment will almost always fail. If, however, 5-10 billion platelets are injected, the treatment will almost always work very well. Small amounts of blood drawn yield lower platelet counts compared to larger blood volumes. For this reason Dr. Brereton only uses larger blood draw volumes to generate PRP injections. Dr. Brereton reserves the manual system for ligaments and tendons and uses a minimum of a 60 ml blood draw to increase the platelet count in the PRP. He uses the automated Angel system and 180 ml blood draws to treat large joints like the knee because this approach reliably produces 5-10 billion platelets in the PRP injection. When seeking PRP treatment be sure to know the blood volumes and PRP concentrations being used as these factors are critical to a successful PRP treatment. The evidence is very clear that small blood volumes and low platelet count PRP injections are not effective treatments. Conversely, the research tells us that PRP treatments using larger blood volumes generating high platelet concentrations are much more likely to succeed.
Prolotherapy
Dextrose at 15% to 25% concentration combined with an anesthetic, when injected into partially torn or lax ligaments/tendons/muscles, stimulates the immune system to heal those tissues resulting in reduced pain.
Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid acts as a lubricant, anti inflammatory and joint cushion to help with osteoarthritis. Many extended pharmacare plans cover the cost Durolane and Cingal, the two types of hyaluronic acid Trent uses in his practice.
Cortisone
Corticosteroids, also called cortisone, is a family of anti-inflammatory and pain relieving molecules that have a powerful place in sports medicine and treating pain. When injected into an inflammed or painful area, they quickly reduce inflammation and pain. One of their most effective uses is in a diagnostic injection where cortisone and local anesthetic are placed in the area suspected to be the pain generator to help diagnose the location of pain.
Ozone Therapy
Ozone is powerful oxidative therapy that balances the immune system, improves your cells' ability to use oxygen to make energy, is antimicrobial and stimulates the production of antioxidant enzymes in the body.
Prolozone
Combining ozone therapy with prolotherapy and PRP makes these treatments more effective and helps treat sore joints, often resulting in immediate pain reduction, improved range of motion and better function.
Neural Therapy
The injection of procaine into scars, autonomic nervous system ganglia and trigger points helps to improve lymphatic circulation, blood flow and autonomic nervous system function resulting in less pain, improved mood and a greater sense of well-being.
Perineural Injection Therapy
5% dextrose has a remarkable ability to heal injured subcutaneous nerves and reduce pain. This simple treatment pioneered by Dr. Lyftogt has helped many people with previously unresponsive chronic pain.
IV Therapy
The intravenous use of vitamin C, ALA, curcumin, artesunate and various other vitamins and minerals can be helpful in the treatment of a wide variety of acute and chronic diseases.
Hormone Therapy
Dr. Brereton tests for and treats with hormones with the exception of testosterone and DHEA which are not included in the scope of ND's in BC.

Ultrasound, or sonography, is the use of sound waves to create an image on a screen that can be used to diagnose and treat the body.
What are Ultrasound Guided Injections?
Ultrasound guided injections use ultrasound to to place a treatment needle for prolotherapy, cortisone, platelet-rich plasma, anesthetic, 5% dextrose and hyaluronic acid. Ultrasound allows Dr. Brereton to see the target, needle and all tissues in between making his injections safer, more accurate and effective.
